Video Education Case Study: Give Patients Multiple Ways to Engage With Your Message

Not everyone learns the same way: some people need to learn by reading…others by doing (hands-on)…and others by listening/watching. Your elective surgery website should be catering to all of these individual preferences in order to truly connect with website visitors of any age.

An ophthalmology practice in Virginia realized this fact and made great strides to appeal to different cataract patients through videos. The ophthalmologist created a series of educational videos on his website to explain all of the intricacies of this popular surgery. The videos accompanied traditional written content on the site. Topics included:

  • Laser cataract surgery
  • Cataract anesthesia
  • Blended vision
  • Cataracts and Flomax

After just two months, these videos received over 100 views. The videos are embedded directly within the website and work on PCs, laptops, tablets and smart phones so they can always be viewed on-the-go.

Keep in mind that videos don’t have to have award-winning graphics or animation in them; this particular doctor simply placed the camera in front of him and discussed the topics conversationally. PowerPoint slides were incorporated to visually show some of the detail, but the videos did not cost thousands to produce.

A side benefit is that prospective patients become more familiar with the doctor, feeling more of a connection with his demeanor and personality even before stepping foot into the office.
